THE COMPLEXITY OF COMMUNICATION IN THE SUSTAINABLE UTILIZATION OF COCONUT WASTE FOR LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Objective: This research analyzes effective communication strategies to optimize the sustainable utilization of
coconut waste, aiming to support local economic development through enhanced collaboration among industry,
government, and the community.
Theoretical Framework: Using a stakeholder theory approach, this study identifies the challenges and
communication dynamics among various parties, focusing on differences in interests, goals, and perspectives that
influence collaboration. Effective communication strategies, such as open dialogue, trust-building, and the use of
communication platforms that facilitate active participation, are essential to address these complexities.
Method: A qualitative research method was used to understand communication in the context of local economic
empowerment in Panyileukan District, Bandung City, West Java. Informants were selected through purposive
sampling, including coconut traders, private sector representatives, government officials, environmental
community members, volunteers, and local residents. Data were collected through observation, in-depth
interviews, and focus group discussions, and analyzed using stakeholder analysis to identify roles, interests, and
interactions among stakeholders.
Results and Discussion: The findings show that stakeholder diversity and communication challenges, such as
miscommunication and differences in understanding, can be overcome through communication strategies that
involve open dialogue and active participation.
Research Implications: This research provides important insights into the relationship between effective
communication and the success of local economic empowerment through the utilization of coconut waste.
Originality/Value: This study offers new strategies with the potential to enhance collaboration and contributes to
the literature on environmental communication and sustainable economic development.
